Spam Onslaught Mounts, But Soon May Face New Barriers

Newhouse A1: "Internet gatekeepers are edging toward closing a major loophole that lets spammers sneak past junk e-mail defenses and evade legal punishment.

In recent months, Internet standards makers have been struggling to agree on a system that can identify e-mail address forgery and cut down on spam, viruses and 'phishing' e-mails. The latter attempt to steal financial data by masquerading as legitimate messages from banks and other businesses."
