State taxpayers a little less giving

State taxpayers a little less giving: "If a two-year trend continues, several New Jersey charities could get less help from taxpayers who had a chance to contribute on April 15.
On state tax forms, the Department of Treasury lists 8 to 10 organizations that are seeking donations. Taxpayers can 'check off' a specific group and contribute any amount of money, from $1 on up. That amount will either be deducted from the refund owed to a taxpayer or will increase the sum to be paid, officials said.

While state accountants are still calculating the contributions for tax year 2003, figures from 2001 and 2002 show that six of the eight charitable, educational, or medical organizations listed on tax forms saw decreases in the number of contributors as well as the sizes of the donations. "
