As chairman of the nation's oldest civil rights organization, Julian Bond has seen a number of tense times.

Bond has served at the helm of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for eight consecutive years.

Last year President Bush declined to attend the convention in Philadelphia, leading Bond to make critical remarks about the president, which in turn sparked an Internal Revenue Service investigation into the group's tax-exempt status."
