When times are tough, money is tight and corporate head count is shrinking, philanthropy and volunteer time could be considered feel-good luxuries that businesses can no longer afford. If so, why are 8,700 Ford Motor Co. employees -- nearly quadruple the number a year ago -- participating in volunteer projects this week that range from building houses in Detroit to cleaning parks in California and delivering medicine and pulling teeth in the Philippines?"
