We know first hand, because so many charitable causes come to the attention of our community foundation, and we are able to help, thanks to our generous donors. The goal of Community Profile is to reflect on the generosity of those around us and the good works of unsung heroes who lend a hand with the literally hundreds of local charitable causes that deserve our support. Many don't have the resources to 'toot their own horn' so I try to do it for them. We have so much for which to be thankful and lots to learn from the good works of others. It can be a formidable challenge to decide which causes to support at this festive and giving time of year but I will highlight a few I have been privileged to visit in the last week or so."

Charities Suffering This Holiday Season | WWAY NewsChannel 3 | Wilmington NC News: "Tis the season for charitable donations. But the salvation army and area churches say it's been the slowest season in more than a decade. Shiloh Baptist Pastor D.K. Ferguson says, 'We've seen some downturn in the gifts that are being given, and those who are giving.'

Major Butch Mallard of the Salvation Army says, 'Our monetary donations are down, and I think that has to do with the economy, but we have more people coming to us for assistance.' The struggling economy means more people have fallen on hard times, forcing them to pinch pennies."

‘Non-profit making must mean just that’ - Times Online: "Today, the nonprofit sector, as it is known in the US, is thriving. More than one million charities represent a huge proportion of the economy and almost one in ten people works for a charity. But exactly what is meant by “nonprofit making” is the subject of concern for Mark Rosenman, a public service professor at the Union Institute & University, a distance-learning institution, and an expert on the US voluntary sector."

We are in the midst of an economic crisis that will last for some time. This economic slowdown will more than likely have a serious negative impact on the nonprofit sector that will be worse than the impact following the 9/11 tragedy. Not long after 9/11, we called together some members of the community, and McKinsey & Co. prepared a report and made recommendations to the nonprofit community. In addition, the Collaborative Alliance was formed to help and encourage nonprofit organizations to work more closely together."

There are many losers in the sagging economy, but charities are at the top of the list.

Charities need more support when times are tough, not less. It's a vicious cycle. The shaky economy increases the need for charitable services, but donations are down.

Grant-making foundations are finding the value of their endowments down with the equity markets — their grants for 2009 are likely to be lower.

Most charitable giving is done in the final quarter of the calendar year. Folks size up their financial situation and make donations to secure the charitable deduction for their tax returns before year-end."
