TheDartmouth.com: Pelzel analyzes trends in non-profit donations

TheDartmouth.com: Pelzel analyzes trends in non-profit donations: "The highest motivation for giving to educational institutions is primarily a belief in the cause, Pelzel said. The second most influential factor is loyalty to the institution, but colleges and universities cannot solely rely on alumni donations motivated by nostalgia, she said.

“Educating leaders for the next generation prepares people to give back and gives people the capacity to think broadly about human issues,” she said.

Tax incentives are not the driving motivation for individuals to make donations, but they do determine the amount donors give, according to Pelzel."

The Nonprofit Quarterly | @npquarterly | Is Ben Bernanke the Sector's Newest, and Most Respected, Ally?: "But Greenspan’s successor at the helm of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, appears aware and supportive of the role of nonprofits in the U.S. economy and its recovery from the rampaging recession – and he said so recently at a Federal Reserve Bank conference on community development. By keynoting the conference along with Jeffrey Sachs of the Earth Institute, Bernanke sounded like the philosophical opposite of Greenspan and an important voice endorsing the service andpolicy roles of nonprofits. Foundations don’t practice what they preach: "Philanthropic foundations are like old-fashioned slot machines. They have one arm and are known for their occasional payout.

Although the term “mission-related investing” found its way into the lexicon of philanthropy decades ago, the finance committees of most foundations continue to manage their endowments like investment bankers.
