Aaron Hurst: Are Nonprofit Boards a Good Idea?

Aaron Hurst: Are Nonprofit Boards a Good Idea?: On a trip to China last year, a leader in their nascent philanthropic community asked me if China should introduce the idea of boards to their social sector. It caught me by surprise. It had never occurred to me that a nonprofit sector could exist without them.

Are nonprofit boards a social innovation worthy of export or would you recommend other countries find a better model?

Defense.gov News Article: Lynn Asks Department to Unite for Charitable Giving: The department has a history of being out in front, of leading the pack for the federal government, and I’m confident this year will be no different,” Lynn, DOD’s vice chair for the campaign, told CFC leaders at a campaign kickoff event in the Pentagon.

Last year, contributors gave $110 million to the campaign, which serves more than 4,000 charities, Michael L. Rhodes, the CFC’s director for administration and management, said.

Cecilia T. Capers: Is Philanthropy an Exclusionary Term in African-American Communities?

Cecilia T. Capers: Is Philanthropy an Exclusionary Term in African-American Communities?: For most people involved in the work of doing good, they have participated in various debates concerning the different viewpoints, as well as interpretations, of philanthropy and charity. The mere utterance of these two words in a sentence is sometimes met with the same level of passion as a debate on the floor of the House of Representative. In African-American communities, there are various interpretations of each word as well as the activities and individuals associated with charitable or philanthropic work. By taking a look at how the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the two words, it is evident that the debate is not unfounded:

Is Asian charity different than Western charity? | Mitchell Hinz | 101fundraising

Is Asian charity different than Western charity? | Mitchell Hinz | 101fundraising: he swing to the East is centered, of course, on Asia’s two biggest countries, China and India, but as countless Economist articles point out, many countries with LESS than a billion people (!) have a lot going on as well. For example, most people don’t know that Singapore, where I now live, boasts one of the world’s highest GDP-per-capitas: almost US$ 60,000 per person (one in six households has a net worth of MORE than US$ 1 million). However, Indonesia is still the region’s *largest* economy, despite having far higher poverty rates. The GDP-per-capita in Indonesia is only a bit over US$ 4,600 per person (almost 1,500% lower!). Conclusion: Singapore has LOTS of rich people. Indonesia has LOTS of poor people, but a fair number of RICH people, too.

So, if you were a fundraiser (which is a fair assumption, since you’re still reading) the question is — where should you be fundraising?

The AFP Blog: i’ve taught students at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota since 2007. This year was my last time teaching a course on the globalization of philanthropy in St. Mary’s Master’s program.
I listened to two compelling student presentations while I was there: one on the impact of hyper-philanthropy and the other on the inter-generational transfer of knowledge and experience in the women’s movement.

We cannot achieve our promise without philanthropy.

Private support is profoundly important, especially as we face public disinvestment in higher education and a resulting rise in tuition.

Philanthropy will not -- and should not -- replace public investment.

Philippe Cousteau Jr. Is In It For Love And Money | Fast Company: In the wake of the recession, Cousteau began to wonder if the not-for-profit system itself was flawed. "I've been a grant seeker all my life," he says. "But when I apply for one and get it, that means someone else doesn't. I didn't want to be a part of that anymore. I wanted to contribute to that pool and make it bigger." So two years ago, he began considering other possibilities.

Soon enough, Cousteau settled on starting a socially responsible exchange-traded fund (ETF), similar in many ways to a traditional mutual fund, which is open to institutional and individual investors alike. (A main difference is that shares in an ETF can be traded on a stock exchange.)

Telephone calls to lapsed donors can bring them back. Calls to new donors, especially online donors, can turn a drive-by donor into a second-time giver, or even a monthly donor.

In fact, it’s more profitable to call new online donors and ask for a monthly gift, than it is to send them another email. And, while the first 30 seconds are key to the success of the call, the typical telemarketer wins or loses in the first five seconds.

In 2011, charities around the world face an extremely difficult charitable giving environment due to the global recession. While giving in the United States went up slightly in 2010 (see below), it was not enough to make up for the significant increases that had occurred over the previous two years. In addition, because of the recession, demand for charitable services continues to remain very high

Faldetta, along with Clark, developed the idea of Kuska, a nonprofit organization that provides students in Peru with money sponsored by a donor so they can attend graduate school.
