Seth's Blog: When a conference works (and doesn't): When a conference works (and doesn't)

When we get together with others, even at a weekly meeting, it either works, or it doesn't. For me, it works:

...If everything is on the line, if in any given moment, someone is going to say or do something that might just change everything. Something that happens in the moment and can't possibly be the same if you hear about it later. It might even be you who speaks up, stands up and makes a difference. (At most events, you can predict precisely what's going to be said, and by whom). In the digital age, if I can get the notes or the video later, I will.

What We Lose When We Lose Workplace Giving - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly

What We Lose When We Lose Workplace Giving - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: But workplace giving wasn’t just designed to funnel money to charities, as crucial as that might be. Frequently, workplace giving has been the venue for ordinary Americans to connect to charity in a tactile way. It was how many Americans actually learned about and connected to the charitable sector. It was how many people actually got involved with charities beyond making contributions. Those of us who have been responsible for organizing United Way drives (this author chaired a city government’s United Way drive in a Northeastern city one year) know that these campaigns are built on connecting charities to givers, creating volunteer opportunities, and educating workers about the shape and structure of the nonprofit sector in their communities.

Late last year, the trio, whose members have requested anonymity, offered a generous gift to George Brown College on condition that a room in its new waterfront campus be named after Lalaine de Vera, a Philippine nanny and elder care worker.

3 Key Elements of Capitalist Philanthropy - Forbes

3 Key Elements of Capitalist Philanthropy - Forbes: Capitalist philanthropy begins with a profitable organization and then moves quickly to incorporate social impact. It is quite similar to social entrepreneurship, although that term tends to involve a non-profit structure with a direct focus on a cause or the environment. Capitalist philanthropy falls into the ‘Triple-Win’ model of being valuable to clients, profitable for the organization, and positively affecting the world. The term is not brand new, but is being discussed more often as the millennial generation has developed a strong desire for meaningful work. Perhaps this is as a result of the ‘profit at all cost’ mantra that led our nation to the brink of financial collapse recently. As one savvy Los Angeles entrepreneur, Brent Bushnell, told me recently, “Companies without social impact culture will soon be obsolete.” Here are 3 key elements to move your organization into capitalist philanthropy:

They approved the IRA Charitable Rollover.

They imposed limits on itemized deductions for higher-income taxpayers.

They "permanently" modified the estate tax calculation.

Corporate citizenship efforts pay off for U.S. businesses - The Denver Post

Corporate citizenship efforts pay off for U.S. businesses - The Denver Post: In light of this disturbing trend, companies must pay close attention to their investments in corporate-citizenship initiatives, not only to help their reputation for acting responsibly among consumers but also to help the bottom line.

A new report called "The State of Corporate Citizenship 2012" published by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship reveals that four of every five executives from all business types and industries believe that environmental, social (including philanthropy) and governance investments create financial value for their companies. The study, conducted by surveying 749 executives from mostly medium and large domestic and global companies, reports that firms that strategically align and "integrate corporate citizenship with business goals" and make a longer-term commitment and investment in those strategies "have at their disposal a more robust set of tools for serving employees, shareholders and communities."

Exciting Time To Be A Fundraiser | The Agitator - Fundraising, Direct Marketing and Advocacy Strategies for Nonprofits

Exciting Time To Be A Fundraiser | The Agitator - Fundraising, Direct Marketing and Advocacy Strategies for Nonprofits: I had already posted yesterday’s piece on the importance of thinking bigger and better when I received Marc Chardon’s view of the “Key Non Profit Sector Trends in 2013.”

Marc is the CEO of Blackbaud. His views are important. Partly because he sets the future strategy for a company that provides fundraising tools and data for nearly 30,000 nonprofits, but also because he’s a calm, thoughtful guy who participates in and supports some important thought leadership in our sector. (See especially the summary of Growing Philanthropy – an incisive view to the future that you can download here.
