Community philanthropy - giving back in hard times : East Chicago Community News: The severe recession of 2007-08 did not bring charitable giving to a screeching halt, but it did play havoc with the endowments of community foundations everywhere.

The stock market took a serious nose-dive in the past five years and these charitable endowments, the life-blood of community foundations, lost money that normally would be distributed to local nonprofit organizations.

Hoodwinked? As Nonprofits Focus on Charitable Deduction, Sequestration Cuts Inflict Pain - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly

Hoodwinked? As Nonprofits Focus on Charitable Deduction, Sequestration Cuts Inflict Pain - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: if government extends the continuing resolution, as we expect it will, what effect might that have on the negotiations between the White House and Congress in relation to sequestration? President Barack Obama has indicated that he will still push for new revenues. Does that mean President Obama will revive his proposal to cap the deductibility of charitable donations (and other itemized deductions) at 28 percent even though the top tax rate is now 39.6 percent? If that proposal were to resurface, would it have a prayer of passage, having gone nowhere in Congress four times running?

And where will the charitable deduction fit into the larger issue of maintaining federal government funding for charities that address the basic needs of lower income Americans? Here is our analysis of the short-term future of the charitable deduction, pro and con, based on the surprising and perplexing House Ways and Means Committee hearings that were convened to get charities to speak out on their incentive in the federal tax code.

India Philanthropy Report 2013 - Bain Report - Bain & Company - Publications: A major focus of the India Philanthropy Report 2013 is to delve deeper into how charitable organisations assess the impact of their work, and how they can better communicate that impact to donors. We believe that this theme is relevant to all stakeholders within the philanthropic ecosystem and is critical to both optimising the outcomes of philanthropy and boosting confidence among donors. For giving to grow to its full potential in India, it will be of paramount importance to ensure that donors and recipients have a common language and common goals around results.

Building a better philanthropist | Opinion | Jewish Journal

Building a better philanthropist | Opinion | Jewish Journal: In the last couple of decades, a tectonic shift has altered the landscape of Jewish philanthropy. The phenomenon is not only Jewish — the number of foundations in the United States has grown fivefold in the last 20 years; the same growth in donor-advised funds has taken just a decade.

The relative weight of independent philanthropy — as opposed to communal giving — has gone off the charts. The Jewish Federation system in North America holds an impressive $15 billion of philanthropic assets, but based on conservative estimates, the overall “pie” of Jewish philanthropic assets is more than $75 billion.

Palm Beach Opera streamlines, reinvents itself to stay viable - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com: The nonprofit took out a long-term lease on 6,000-square-feet to save money on renting out rehearsal spaces daily around town. Instead of buying, it invested $75,000 to upgrade the leased space — aiming to save about that much yearly on rentals. It may save even more, by renting its own space to others.

The investment is part of a larger restructuring by the group that has also meant trimming the number of full-scale operas yearly and attracting younger audiences and multi-year donors to improve finances.

UWyo Nonprofit Management Resource: Accountability: Does one size fit all? Should it?: Accountability: Does one size fit all? Should it?
By Cynthia MacDuff

Accountability seems to bring about collective groans amongst nonprofit employees and board members, invoking long lists of requirements that simply do not work for all agencies. But accountability does not have to be terrible if we take different pieces of accountability and customize them to fit the needs of our own agency.

182 nonprofits participate in first annual area give-a-thon - Buffalo Rising: For its inaugural year, the Spring It On event appears to have been a big success. The first year for these types of fundraising initiatives can be more of a learning curve, in order to introduce the program to those who are, for the most part, unfamiliar with the widespread give-a-thon. As it turns out, 1,307 donors contributed $72,500 to the 24-hour campaign, which was held on March 1, 2013. "Spring It On provided a focal point for our community to be part of something that can have a tremendous impact on a variety of organizations and the citizens they serve within a very short timeframe," said Michael Weiner, United Way president and CEO. "In addition to financial support, we believe Spring It On helped to educate local citizens about the tremendous contributions made by the nonprofit community every day. Ultimately it worked - the Buffalo Niagara region truly demonstrated its generous spirit."

Has Venture Philanthropy Passed Its Peak? | Stanford Social Innovation Review

Has Venture Philanthropy Passed Its Peak? | Stanford Social Innovation Review: In philanthropy, we are seeing a lot of early-stage nonprofits with ideas and leadership that aren’t ready for prime time. Unfortunately, many are getting funded. Some talented and not-so-talented social entrepreneurs are getting hold of sizeable amounts of money to give their idea a go. This trend is reminiscent of the 1999-2000 Internet funding bubble.

Another indication that the end is near is when there are multiple variations of the same idea, or when the ideas themselves are on the periphery or so amorphous that it’s hard to know what the idea is, exactly. The number of tangential education-related nonprofits that claim that they will substantively change educational outcomes for kids is staggering. Many are doing good things for kids, but they don’t have meaningful, measurable impact and are diverting philanthropic dollars from organizations and interventions that have true impact.
